Kelli’s Dress Pattern Review

Some patterns just make you feel like a million bucks. This is one of them. The new Kelli’s Dress by Patterns for Pirates has just been released and as soon as I saw Judy’s sketches for it I was totally sold. I love a good wrap bodice and a bit of ruching, so this was just my type of design.

The bodice is low enough for a sexy feel without being too much, and you can wear a regular bra with it too. I sewed the little cap sleeves here, which I just think looks super cute.

I sewed the straight 2X size, and just used the armscye and sleeve from the 1X. I know from previous makes that my bicep falls into a smaller size with P4P. My only other adjustment was to add 1″ to the skirt as the pattern is drafted for 5ft 5in and I’m 5ft 7in.

The pattern has a great fit and hugs all my curves beautifully. I used a lightweight stretch scuba crepe for this, which I have had in my stash for a while but came from Sew Affordable Fabrics. It would make a great dress for a wedding party in this cheerful floral, I think!

The back neckline is also a V shape, which is unusual and just makes it a little bit different.

I chose the faced option for the neckline. I tacked the facing down at centre back and shoulders and used Wondaweb to stick it down around the whole neckline. No facing flipping out here!

There are loads of options for this pattern, as always with P4P, you get your money’s worth!

I also loved the idea of hacking the pattern to have a little more coverage on the skirt. It was easy enough to do as the pieces are already drafted for the full length skirt.

I wrote a blog post showing how easy it is to do, here. It just gives a little more leg coverage which helps the knee length option be a bit more versatile and work-appropriate.

I used clear elastic to finish the neckline on this version. Which I top stitched with a chainstitch on my coverstitch machine.

The fabric for this one is a lightweight, slinky poly lycra from Rena’s Fabrics Galore on Facebook. I got 2.5m for £11.25 plus a few quid for postage.

Go get your hack on and see what fabulous frocks you can whip up.

Sizes range from 30″ to 60″ bust and 34″ to 64″ hip, so it is very inclusive. There is also a Youth version available too.

The pattern files include print-at-home US Letter and A4 files, layered A0 and Projector files. There is a full photo tutorial which is very clear and easy to follow.

Overall: Not a thing I would change. 10/10.
